Samorost

Samorost – Czech for “to grow by yourself” – Samorost 2 and Machinarium by Amanita Design are a series of beautifully animated “escape the room”-type adventure games, ripe for exploitation in the ELT classroom with almost any age group and level.

 

Since there’s no text in the original game, the key to learning is in the tasks you design. Suggestions include:

  • running dictation – students read and relay instructions to complete each level
  • live listening – students listen and follow instructions to complete each level
  • creative writing or speaking – students write or tell a first- or third-person account of what happened to the man on the planet
  • walkthrough writing I – students play and write a walkthrough for one level, discussing their ideas in small groups as they go
  • walkthrough writing II – students watch a video of a walkthrough for one level and use it to write instructions for another person:

  1. Hey Dave, like the blog. I used Samorost 1 last semester with my P6 class at KCIS in literacy. We spent about four hours a week for six weeks on it. We …
    – created walk throughs in groups for the game to practice process language.
    – created a class word bank based on six screen shots from the game
    – spent three weeks planning and writing chapter books based on the story. These were amazing, and really developed their writing skills.
    – put their stories on a class wiki and then got them to animate them by using pivot stick figure animator.
    The kids really loved this unit of work and have been bugging me to do Samorost 2. I may well give it a go later in the year if we have time. We’ve also been using a wii in class too. We did a lot of work on journalistic writing in literacy, by studying overfishing through the Wii game ‘Endless Ocean Blue World’. I recommend getting a few Wiis at the BC, there’s a lot that you can do with them. Cheers!

    • Dave, thanks again for the great post. These are really creative ideas. Do you have any screenshots of the word banks your students made, or any samples of their writing?

      Have you used Samorost 2 yet or Machinarium?

      How have your P6 students responded to using a class wiki? Do you have any tips you could share with us?

      I hope I’m able to buy some Wiis for the BC one day!
